Tom,

Thank you for your comments. Like you said, what makes a difference is how we deal with problems and challenges that sets us apart from the crowd. When I get cut off by another car in traffic or some other similar situation, I always remind myself that maybe the other person is dealing with a very stressful situation at the moment. Maybe they just got a call about a loved one and are rushing to the hospital to be with them. There could be many different scenarios. We need to be thankful for what we have, count our blessings.....and care. Thanks for your perspective Tom.

Very appropriate story for life as we know it in these United Ststes today! In many cases we need only look over our shoulder to find someone toting a way heavier suitcase. Life is full of problems and challenges; it's how we deal with them that sets us apart from "the crowd." Count your Blessings and always be Thankful for what you have! Share and care - the world needs more of that! As the saying goes: "People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care."

Blaine, always good to hear stories from others as to their experiences. I have also seen a number of people who have been in your son's position. After going out and experiencing life a bit, realize that things aren't so bad. Sounds like the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32). I also know that if your compensation program is set up properly, your maintenance guys can make as much if not more than your senior techs. Of course in order for them to earn it, they have to be selling add-ons and your company benefits as a result.

I think I'll check out the Blue Ocean Strategy as well. Thanks

Good stuff as always.
My oldest son just started back to work here at Comfort service Inc. He started here when in high school and during summers but not what he wanted to do. College didn't pan out after changing courses several times and the other jobs were good when the economy was good.... He is back here and doing maintenance instead of installs (as they are not a frequent as they use to be) He loves doing maintenance on the systems. We have long term employees here and they remember four-five years ago his heart wasn't in it so this story reminds me of that.

I subscribe to your audio series. Thanks for all you guys do for our industry. As contractors we need to get ourselves organized. its a bloody Ocean and it could be a blue Ocean for us all if we would stop competing against each other. I read a great Harvard study called the Blue Ocean strategy. It changed the way I look at Business.

Thanks for the comment Tom,
There is no question that along with their attorney and banker, the relationship a business owner has with their CPA is one of the critical advisers they need to have in place. The small business owner must run their business from a cash flow perspective - that is by the money that flows into and out of their checkbook on a daily basis. If they are not familiar with creating a cash flow budget, they need to learn how to create it and follow it.

I always find it interesting that contractors have no problem going out to buy a new tool or meter to help them troubleshoot the equipment they are working on, but they will not create a budget which is essentially the meter that they can use to troubleshoot money problems in their company.

Excellent blog Bill! What many businesses lack is the ability to interpret their financial information in such a way that enables them to improve their operations. Unfortunately most look to their CPA firm and end up frustrated with the lack of answers. I'd highly recommend they work with people like yourself for this type of assistance.

Since I published this post, I have gone out and found someone to make me uncomfortable. I chose someone who knows my business, but is on the outside. I am meeting with this individual monthly and he challenges me at each meeting to look at my business differently. Some of the ideas we have come up with have worked extremely well and others have not. At a one-day EntreLeadership conference I attended, Dave Ramsey said something like 90% of the ideas they come up with aren't any good but the other 10% are money-makers. You have to look at them all to figure out which ones are the real deal.
